As part of their Resounding Silents season, the Star and Shadow Cinema are exhibiting their pick of the best silent films alongside local talent and avant garde movies. This week it’s the turn of the spectacular drama The Wind.

The Wind was originally released in 1928 and the romantic drama tells the story of Letty, a young woman who moves to West Texas where she finds herself unsettled by the ever-present wind and sand. Family tensions and unwanted interest from a trio of suitors leave Letty feeling increasingly disturbed by her new life, resulting in tragedy.

This dark but delightful silent movie, with its insight in to Letty’s struggle with the natural elements and her own overactive imagination, is still as moving now as it was in 1928. One of the last silent films released by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, it’s still as fresh now as it was back then.

The Wind screens at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle on Sunday 15th March.
