Reliably informed

They say travel broadens the mind, and it seems The Wedding Present’s David Gedge has been well and truly inspired by a road trip he took across the US on latest album Going, Going…, which will be performed in full, accompanied by short films for each track, at Sage Gateshead on Friday 9th September.

The album is a series of twenty interconnected pieces of music, with instrumental tracks rubbing shoulders with traditional headlong rhythms and clashing guitars. The group’s masterful indie pop veers into orchestral arrangements and ambient soundscapes one moment, and heavy guitar screeching feedback the next. The tracks become the backbone to the filmic element of the release; created by Gedge and photographer Jessica McMillan, the short series of atmospheric films tie the tracks together, with the masterful scenery of the American West providing a real visual treat.

Always a band to kick against established conventions, the melancholic indie rockers aren’t merely releasing an album, but a multi-media package which includes the films and a ‘book pack’ with additional lyrics and deluxe 180g vinyl too. Our advice: catch them in all their live filmic glory first.

The Wedding Present play Sage Gateshead on Friday 9th September.
