In an age where it’s often easier for a band to just shut up and play the hits, The Wedding Present have managed to strike a careful balance between giving the audience what they want whilst maintaining an ongoing artist credibility. They trade off full length tours highlighting the Watusi and Hit Parade collections (to give two recent example) with those matching their own growing ambition, such as last year’s round of audio-visual shows in support of their expansive, orchestral double-album Going Going…

For 2017 though, Wedding Present bandleader David Gedge is revisiting the debut album that made all this possible, their classic 1987 debut George Best. Get talking to any Wedding Present fan and there’s sure to be plenty of debate as to their best album – this writer swears by the Albini-assisted Seamonsters and their dramatic comeback record Take Fountain – but there’s no doubting the importance of George Best to their career. Featuring iconic songs like My Favourite Dress and What Did Your Last Servant Die Of?, George Best introduced the world to Gedge’s raised-eyebrown romanticism and Velvets-on-fast-forward guitar technique and remains an indie milestone to this today.

With the band bringing their George Best 30th Anniversary Tour to O2 Academy Newcastle on Wednesday 7th June, expect this to be a major date for indie fans of all ages.
