If there was one band who truly broke through in 2014, then it was The War On Drugs. Despite the Philadelphians releasing two exceptional LPs in the past – Wagonwheel Blues and Slave Ambient – it wasn’t until the universally praised Lost In The Dream last year that Adam Granduciel and his bandmates truly cemented themselves as contemporary titans. As part of their latest UK tour, they’re bringing their blend of psych and Americana-infused indie rock to Newcastle’s O2 Academy on Friday 27th February.

Not known for producing short songs – only two songs on Lost In The Dream clock in at less than five minutes – the group are feted for their sprawling, extended, enveloping live versions of their tracks, which take the audience on a journey filled with uncompromising riffs and mellower, psychedelic trips. Don’t expect the three-minute single version of Under The Pressure; you’re much more likely to get the eight-minutes plus wig-out found on the LP.

With an ability to fill vast landscapes and intimate spaces with a fierce yet somehow fragile sound – sometimes slightly reminiscent of the all-American blues-rock of Bruce Springsteen – this is a chance to see a band at the peak of their powers.
