The Twilight Sad are still yet to hit the big-time – and maybe that’s part of the reason we love them so. The Glaswegian underdogs have remained firmly on terra firma while Scots stable mates Frightened Rabbit signed on to a big label and continue their ascension.

However, something wonderful is slowly starting to happen. The post-punk trio released their fourth studio album Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave late last year; with punchy guitar hooks overriding the synths and booming bass lines of their previous efforts, the self-proclaimed ‘miserablists’ still have the same haunting melodies in them, while remaining faithful to the pop sensibilities of their 2007 indie breakthrough, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters.

Their native land also appears to be embracing them – quite rightly – as Scottish treasures. In 2013 they collaborated with an entire orchestra for a gig at the medieval gothic Paisley Abbey. Fast forward little over a year and they were part of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations on New Year’s Eve. Their steady upward trajectory only makes them all the more endearing.

The Twilight Sad play The Cluny, Newcastle on Saturday 25th April.
