Studio Ghibli have produced yet another visually stunning, whimsical and enthralling masterpiece. Delving once again into the deep well of Japanese folklore, they have made a film able to be fully appreciated by children and adults alike. The simple flowing lines of beautifully drawn animation give this the feel of a child’s storybook, which befits the tale being told.

Isao Takahata takes us through the unusual and magical life of Princess Kaguya. Born from the inside of a bamboo shoot, she has some kind of congenital growth defect, but despite that becomes a beautiful and spellbinding young woman who enchants everyone she meets. She must, however, pay penance for a crime committed… Unusually, this has a star studded Hollywood cast, with Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick Ass, The Equaliser) in the lead role, and interestingly Sonny Corleone (James Caan) as the old bamboo cutter with Mary Steenburgen (The Help, Elf) as his wife.

There is also a Japanese version with subtitles, which personally, I would rather watch. Luckily, the good old Tyneside Cinema will be showing both. If you liked Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro (and how couldn’t you?) then you will love The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya comes to the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Friday 20th March.
