Being described as a musical polymath is no small praise, and it seems that scene stalwart Paul Jeans has hit upon a project which manages to contain his ever-changeable sound. Going under the moniker of The Shooting Of…, Jeans’ new single, The Sky Is Full Of Lights, is probably his best work to date, showing huge promise for the release of his debut album in March next year, teasing alt. pop vignettes and an experimental pop noir sound.

The Sky Is Full Of Lights’ piano-led glimpse into hope and renewal glows with warm synth sounds, clattering drum beats and ghostly vocals, managing to fuse an orchestral beauty with dramatic percussion, and offering a lyric that will be floating through your head for days after hearing it.

It’s in the live arena that Jeans really shines though; described as a ‘musical octopus’, he manipulates keyboards, synths, samples, drums and guitars often simultaneously, creating a huge sound and offering up an impressive feat of dexterity. Occasionally backed with visuals, his live set is a visual and aural pleasure; take the opportunity to see him live at a variety of intimate shows in February (with support from the inimitable Trev Gibb at selected shows), and witness the full-on splendour of an artist at the top of his game.

The Sky Is Full Of Lights is available via Bandcamp from 4th December.

The Shooting Of… plays several live dates in January and February, including dates at The Custom Space, South Shields (Saturday 23rd January), Tynemouth Surf Café (Saturday 6th February), The Waiting Room, Eaglescliffe (Sunday 7th February) and Barrels Alehouse, Berwick (Saturday 13th February).
