To have caught the ear of Bella Union boss Simon Raymonde with your first demo is quite an achievement for a new band; to then be invited to record your debut EP at the label’s studio in Shoreditch goes one step further. Local indie/new wave popsters The Radio Set have notched up said achievements in their short time together already, and have a certain Peter Hook lined up to record their next single later this year.

It’s pretty easy to see why the band have garnered so much attention; their well-executed indie is full of sass and pop, catchy choruses underpin genuinely great songwriting and imaginative arrangements. The edgy bass that opens Can’t Give You Up gives way to lead singer Karen’s superb vocals, which drip with a perfect mixture of disdain and allure, it’s easy to see why she’s been compared to the likes of Debbie Harry and Kim Wilde. Elsewhere on the EP, Envy is a barnstorming new wave romp, replete with spacey bass, sparkly synth lines and a hooky chorus; You Broke My Heart When You Kissed Her’s tale of teenage love is backed by lovely buzzing guitar while In The Night shows a darker side to the band’s usually sprightly sound, with a delicious juxtaposition of dark lyrics and faintly sinister guitar meanderings.

The band play Stockton’s Musiclounge on Saturday 7th October.
