If you like your theatre squarely on the provocative end of the scale then Philip Ridley’s The Pitchfork Disney will be right up your street. For the fourth year in a row, the Sunderland University Faculty of Arts is taking over the Arts Centre Washington with Sunfest, choosing to stage a revival of Ridley’s controversial play.

Don’t be fooled by the name: there’ll be no Disney-like fluff. The original is thought to be the play that birthed the “In Yer Face” theatre movement of the 1990s, which looked to stun its audience with brash and confrontational material. The story centres around two adults, who behave largely like overgrown, feral children and survive primarily on chocolate. It is a surreal, dreamlike story which brings in themes of childhood fears and traumas with the introduction of the characters Cosmo Disney, whose party trick is munching on cockroaches, and his sinister partner Pitchfork Cavalier.

Comprised of dark themes and lengthy, descriptive monologues, it won’t be an easy watch but it’ll definitely be an intriguing one that’s unmissable.

The Pitchfork Disney comes to the Washington Arts Centre on Saturday 25th April.
