Reliably informed

I sadly think that I may be in the minority of people who can say they’ve both read the entirety of The Odyssey and enjoyed it. (I am an Ancient History graduate, so it is kind of my responsibility.) Even though, I can admit that reading about Odysseus trying to travel a mere 600 miles and only managing to get home after a decade of wrong turns is infuriating at best.

Thankfully, there are those willing to blow the dust off the pages of even the most tedious of stories and make them a little more palatable for the casual audience. Step up, critically acclaimed theatre troupe The Pantaloons, who are gearing up for their Spring 2019 tour of their very own classical Greek adaptation, and who aim to put the humour back into Homer. The Odyssey is getting a comedic update this time round, because what this epic poem needs is some clowning around to bring it from the 7th Century BC into the 21st, and The Pantaloons, with their playful style and irrepressible attitude, are the ones to do it. It’s not like the original wasn’t a little bit funny anyway; it is perhaps the earliest example of a man refusing to stop and ask for directions. You can catch The Pantaloons’ The Odyssey at the Arts Centre Washington on Wednesday 13th and Middlesbrough Theatre on Friday 15th March.
