If you had the pleasure of seeing the wonderful Potiche a couple of years ago, then you’ll know that Francois Ozon is one of the most talented directors around right now, capable of mixing psychological warfare with light and fluffy humour with ease. His latest venture, The New Girlfriend, might sound like a rom com that’s as light as a feather, but underestimate it at your peril: this is much more than your average love story.

Anais Demoustier plays Claire, a young woman whose close childhood friend Lea suddenly passes away. Lea leaves behind a husband, David (Romain Duris) and a newborn baby. When you realise that Claire is taking it upon herself to look after the pair in Lea’s absence, you might think that this will be a simple and heartwarming tale about newfound love. Not so. Things take something of a complicated turn when Claire finds out that David has been dressing as a woman in Lea’s old clothes. It’s more twisted, playful and delightful shenanigans from Ozon.

The New Girlfriend begins screening at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Friday 15th May.
