If you’re a real, hardcore cinephile and know your onions then you’ve probably already heard of the Scalarama Film Fest, an unofficial month of cinema formerly known as just September (Scalarama is a better name for September anyway). It celebrates events put on by all manner of venues and film enthusiasts across the world who truly love cinema and as part of the celebrations the legendary Mondo Weirdo film club is returning for one day only.

Originating in the eighties in Gateshead, the film club ran successfully for years on the idea that four obscure and often downright weird films would be showcased over the course of a single afternoon, to be enjoyed in the company of like-minded friends and maybe a pint or two. Everything from Japanese monster movies to schoolgirl serial killers and absolute rubbish sci-fi films (you know, the ones with the terrible acting and men in completely non-threatening rubber suits) were shown and on Saturday the principle will be revived. Four films have been selected – Q, The Winged Serpent; For y’ur height only; Tokyo Gore Police; The Pink Angels – in a feast of ultraviolence, bikers, punks and drunks that will tantalise any real cinema fan. Don’t let this Scalarama treat pass you by.

The Mondo Weirdo Film Club comes to the NewBridge Project, Newcastle on Saturday 26th September.
