Country rock, Americana and R’n’B. They’re not exactly the first genres you think of when asked about the music of Edinburgh but The Holy Ghosts have made it their mission to break the mold since 2012. Their music plugs a gap between honky tonk blues and the swagger of stadium indie that’s thoroughly infectious. Songs like Little Kickstarter hark back both to the greats of country music as well as to the most soulful and bluesy songs of the Rolling Stones (the contemplative Willin’ has more of a little touch of Wild Horses about it).

As might be expected from a group of fusion country rockers, it’s in the live arena that the four-piece really shine. The group has built a strong reputation for their charismatic sets, which has landed them slots supporting acts as wide ranging as Scottish cult heroes The Proclaimers and gothic blues rockers Alabama 3. Expect some barnstorming moments and more than your recommended daily allowance of slide guitar from the self-styled “make me feel good rock ’n’ roll band”.

The Holy Ghosts play The Cluny, Newcastle on Friday 24th July.
