Reliably informed

Perhaps it’s apt that The Hepburns are playing one of their thirtieth anniversary shows at The Waiting Room. They’ve been around for three decades but you’d be forgiven for thinking they’d disappeared into obscurity a long time ago. The Hepburns released a flurry of singles on Cherry Red Records but were often met with confusion from the press (their love of Burt Bacharach and John Barry didn’t help). But after a short time, they disappeared as quickly as they emerged.

But now, almost thirty years later, they’re back and making more music than ever. They’ve produced new albums and expanded their musical chops to include more diverse influences (everything from barbershop quartets to The Pink Panther theme). Confused? Their new, American label were, as they didn’t really know how to describe their latest effort, How The Fallen Are Mighty. Indeed, trying to pigeonhole The Hepburns at this point is about as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack. It’s an intriguing proposition to see a band who are so uninhibited and unconstrained by genres, even so far into their career. Make sure you catch them in case they go on another extended hiatus.

The Hepburns come to The Waiting Room, Eaglescliffe on Sunday 25th October.
