Tom Stoppard is probably one of the best-known and well-loved playwrights of the contemporary era. He’s produced numerous show-stopping works (though luckily not literally), including Shakespeare In Love, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, and Arcadia. Now he’s returned to the acclaimed Natioal Theatre to produce a brand new play, The Hard Problem.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner (whose previous credits include Othello, Hamlet and One Man, Two Guvnors), The Hard Problem follows the story of Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brainscience institute who is harbouring a deep and troubling question: if there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? It’s a philosophical question that puts Hilary at odds with everyone at her workplace, and Hilary needs a miracle to help her find a solution.

Expect a spellbinding production from Stoppard and Hytner as the play is broadcast to cinemas across the UK as part of NT Live.

The Hard Problem screens at various cinemas across the region as part of NT Live on Thursday 16th April. Find out where you can see the screening at the NT Live website.
