2014 was a big year for the Handsome Family, as their song Far From Any Road was used on the credits of the first season of hit southern gothic drama True Detective. The resulting surge in interest, twenty years since they started out, saw most of the dates of their UK tour last spring bumped to larger venues and apparently they’ve charted big time in Kazakhstan.

Of course, their appeal has been obvious to many of us for two decades: Brett’s sonorous, soaring voice, his wife Rennie’s astonishing lyrics – full of melancholy and death and insects and ghosts, the simplicity of their country-folk music, steeped in the Carter Family, gospel and Harry Smith’s anthologies. Their last album, 2013’s Wilderness, was up there with their best and a new one is on the way: according to Rennie it’s written and recording has started and she’s promised us one or two new songs on their imminent UK tour, which sees them fetch up at Gateshead Old Town Hall on Sunday 15th March.

If you’ve never seen them live, you really should – as well as the wonderful music, the interplay between Brett’s gruff Texan persona and Rennie’s patter, by turns whimsical and macabre, is something very special.

The Handsome Family play Gateshead Old Town Hall on Sunday 15th March.
