Inspired by the Suffragettes and Suffragists, The Glass Ceiling celebrates activists from the Tees Valley region whose courage propelled the historic movement to win the right to vote for some British women one hundred years ago. This ambitious and ground-breaking new visual theatre work from Periplum brings to life the self-styled ‘feminine incendiaries’, and the men who marched alongside these pioneers of direct action.

Periplum delivers highly visual, socially significant and emotionally explosive work for all the senses, using innovative dynamic staging and pyrotechnic design, new music, writing and aerial performance in a gritty depiction of the struggle to gain the vote and break through a glass ceiling.

The production offers an intense and interactive experience on a spectacular scale through 360 degree surround performance, and yet also succeeds in bringing the intimacy of human drama to the audience. We know how this story unfolds: these courageous, visionary individuals will break through that glass ceiling, but not without sacrifice. This moving performance is breath-taking and ultimately uplifting – how could it be otherwise?

The show, which was funded by Arts Council England and Tees Valley Combined Authority, will be performed at Market Square in Darlington on Friday 7th September; Kirkleatham Grounds in Redcar on Friday 5th October, Ward Jackson Park in Hartlepool on Friday 19th October and Centre Square, Middlesbrough on Saturday 27th October.
