Music and culture lovers in North Tyneside will be pleased to note the opening of new venue The Exchange, situated within the grounds of a Grade II listed building in North Shields.

The hidden gem boasts a 250 capacity auditorium, with live music, comedy and theatre planned for the space. The icing on the cake is Beldons café bar, where local ales and regionally sourced food is on offer daily.

It’s hoped that the community-run space will become a real hub for the arts in North Tyneside, and the venue are keen to inspire local people to use the space, with promoters, theatre makers and artists encouraged to get in touch.

This month’s events line-up already boasts a couple of proper gems, with The Animals & Friends featuring musicians from the original Geordie rhythm ‘n’ blues legends appearing at the venue on Friday 29th; Poetry Stanza offers spoken word and poetry from Julie Hogg, Renata Connors, Allison Davies and Anne Graal, for those of a literary bent on Thurs 21st; and an art exhibition (beginning Friday 15th July) featuring work from local artists will grace the walls, in aid of Save the Children. There’s also regular folk sessions and open mic nights planned, with loads more in the pipeline, not least the venue’s first major festival, Harvest From The Deep (Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th August), which features the likes of British Sea Power, Richard Dawson, Warm Digits, Pauline Murray and more.
