The Charlatans are one of the great survivors of British indie music and they’ll be bringing their legendary live show to Newcastle just in time for Christmas, with a show at O2 Academy, on Thursday 17th December.

Releasing their first record back in 1990, the band have survived changing musical trends, substance abuse and the death of two key band members.  Emerging from the same Manchester scene that spawned other such legendary bands as James, The Happy Mondays, Joy Division and New Order, they paved the way for the likes of Oasis to reap the rewards in the mid-1990s.

It wasn’t until their fifth record, 1997’s Tellin’ Stories, that the band received the success they’d worked so hard for and were catapulted into the mainstream on the back of songs that remain indie disco classics nearly 20 years later and are sure to be aired at their forthcoming Academy show.

Releasing consistent and eclectic records over the years – from the folky Us And Us Only to the soulful Wonderland – the band took a five year sabbatical before returning this year with their twelfth record Modern Nature to critical and fan acclaim.  Recent singles, the laid back vibes of So Oh and the anthemic Let The Good Times Be Never Ending, prove that this is a band who are not just surviving, but going from strength to strength.

Support on the night will be from Sunderland heroes Frankie & The Heartstrings so if you’re only gonna get to one more gig before the holidays, make sure you’re at this one.

The Charlatans play Newcastle’s O2 Academy on Thursday 17th December.
