A group of fine art graduates from Newcastle University have set up a new pop-up gallery in Byker, creatively titled The Byker Gallery. Located on Shields Road, the gallery has been set up by artist collective Milk, and will celebrate the collaborative potential of art making. “We wanted to set up a non-profit art space for artists to show their work, as it can be difficult getting started once you finish art school.” They explain. “We want to encourage experimental ways of working and invite members of the public to get involved too.”

Four pop-up exhibitions are currently planned, with work exhibited including sculpture, painting, visual installations, sound and performance from artists including Matt Antoniak, Will Burr, Juliet Fleming, Rene McBrearty, Max Lee, Matt Pickering, Maria Abbott, Alice Jones and more. Each exhibition will offer something entirely different, and the artists are encouraged to experiment with the space in the first few days of their one-week pop-up, exhibiting anything they’ve made at the end of the week to the public. Weeks will be loosely themed, with a topic of collaboration on week one, followed by working with found materials, ‘observing the everyday’ in week three and ‘everything that’s left over’ in the final week. Alongside the exhibitions, a series of workshops are on offer, so mere mortals can try their hand at monoprinting, bookbinding and craft making.

With future funding pending, organisers hope the space will become a regular feature of the already bustling Byker/Ouseburn cultural landscape.

The Byker Gallery opens from Thursday 26th November until Saturday 19th December.
