Not many bands can claim to nearly be holders of a world record: back in 2012, the alter-ego of Canadian songwriter Mathias Kom and his bandmates played ten concerts in ten countries across 24 hours, but a well-known brand of Irish beer and their record-keepers wouldn’t recognise the attempt. Still, it’s a feat that only the hyper-literate folk musicians could possibly have accomplished.

Their new UK tour is a little more sedate – eleven venues in fourteen days, stopping off at Middlesbrough’s Westgarth Social Club on Monday 15th June – but will probably be no less energetic or riotous. Kom’s hyperactive live shows revolve around the idea that songs about the inevitability of death can be pretty fun to dance to. Across the span of six albums his group have mixed sincere and sometimes brutal lyrics with Kom’s super-skilful ukulele playing and a wry approach to folk that’s earned them a cult international following. Middlesbrough’s Westgarth Social Club might not be big enough to hold the sheer force of Kom’s music back.
