Reliably informed

Looking back, five kids sat in a Saturday morning school detention doesn’t sound the greatest idea ever concocted in cinematic history.  But somehow, when the brain, the beauty, the jock, the rebel and the recluse walked out of that classroom some ninety minutes later, they’d changed their lives, and ours forever.  The Breakfast Club was, and still is, the defining moment of the 1980’s teen movies that have influenced so much of the film, television and even music you watch and listen to today.

Can it really be 30 years since we first set eyes on Judd Nelson, the bad guy all the good girls wanted and Molly Ringwald, the good girl all the bad guys wanted?  Since we first heard that killer soundtrack that urged us not “forget about” them?  Since we first challenged each other to answer which Breakfast Club character we’d be, when really, there’s a little bit of us all in each of them?  If you grew up in the 1980’s then John Hughes probably helped define your childhood and this is his finest work.

The Breakfast Club screens at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle on Sunday 15th February.
