In this age of digital cameras, a lot of the images we see, even in exhibitions, are only available to goggle at on screens. It’s refreshing then to be able to leaf through a chunky album of good-old fashioned photographs; Side Gallery have kindly put together a collection of some of the very best collections produced this year for us to view for free, every day from Saturday 6th – Friday 12th December (excluding Monday, when the gallery is closed).

The artist photo book is a desirable but (to most people) pricey luxury item. Hundreds, if not thousands, are produced each year, showcasing the best of documentary photographers’ work. As we approach the end of 2014, photography buffs will be able to revel in fifteen of the finest from the last twelve months: beautifully produced publications, large and small, which help keep the tradition alive.

Side has existed on the Quayside for over thirty five years, specialising in social documentary, particularly of marginalised social groups in the North East. Thanks to Lottery funding, the gallery will begin a well deserved, muti-million pound refurb in the new year. Before all that however, join in this celebration of stunning portraits and expertly captured landscapes, all of which proudly embrace the power of print.

The Best Photo Books of 2014 display at the Side Gallery between Saturday 6th and Friday 12th December.
