Middlesrough’s music scene has been towing a fine line recently between buzzing with activity, thanks to a number of appearances from top acts and a slew of rising local bands coming out of the woodwork, and being on the verge of collapse, mostly due to the unexpected and sad closure of Doc Brown’s. The Princess Alice was also closed for a short while but after some tireless work, the guys behind Into Tomorrow have managed to reopen the venue in an attempt to again solidify the local live music scene. For their latest Route 69 event at the venue, they’re showing why, despite some recent hiccups,¬†Middlesbrough is still one of the best places to catch some of the hottest rising bands from near and afar.

Leeds indie-rock band The Barmines are currently embarking on a sell-out UK tour, following the release of their debut EP There’s Never Any Romance and being championed by BBC Introducing. Luckily, this is one of the few non-ticketed events, and with entry being free, there’s no excuse not to see one of the UK’s most rapidly rising bands.

The main support on the night is coming from the high-powered, high-energy supergroup The Magick Godmothers. Featuring members of The Approved and Avalanche Party, the band have essentially locked themselves away for four months working on new material. With this appearance at The Princess Alice being their first in that time, expect a burst of completely raw power and a raft of tasty new tracks. Michael Longstaff, formerly of Sister Rose, will open the night with an acoustic performance containing some of his much-anticipated new material.

If this Route 69 lineup is anything to go by, then we could be heralding a new chapter in the vibrant Middlesbrough live music scene.

The Barmines, The Magick Godmothers and Michael Longstaff all play at The Princess Alice, Middlesbrough on Friday 10th April.
