Based in Teesside since 2016, The Auxiliary has spent a decade running artist-led, grassroots project spaces. As well as co-directing Middlesbrough Art Weekender, they’re also dedicated to helping local artists reach their potential through mentorship and a variety of projects, including FEED, a bi-monthly sound art experience, and Creative Arc, a cultural exchange programme linking Teesside with Detroit.

The Auxiliary have also hosted over 20 international artists, and are currently gearing up to welcome four more. This month they’re touching down at Basecamp (formerly The House of Blah Blah) in Middlesbrough to present AUX-AiR18, a residency programme for up-and-coming international sound artists. The first two of these residencies features STRWÜÜ, who work in performance and sound art. They’ll be taking to the streets to find out more about the area before creating a site-specific installation in response to what they’ve learned. Meanwhile, Monica Vlad utilises old media devices in her work, using these pieces of old technology to create immersive ambient noise.

With two other residencies set to take place during AUX-AiR18 and the chance for local people to get involved in workshops, The Auxiliary are providing a unique opportunity for people to engage with and immerse themselves in innovative sound art.

The exhibition takes place from Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th May at Basecamp, Middlesbrough.
