If you think about the arts and crafts movement then you’ll probably think about William Morris or John Ruskin. But there’s more to the movement than just wallpaper and intricate patterns. This new exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery aims to give the much maligned movement a closer and more thoughtful examination, creating a dialogue between historic and contemporary works to show a different side to the style.

The exhibition will be exploring how many generations of designers have created new ways of living and working in eras of collaborative design and experimentation, also looking at how the link between house and garden (or the natural and the man made) can be a major source of inspiration for those working in the field. Not confined simply to paintings, furniture, textiles, ceramics, books and photography will all be on display to further highlight the diversity and potential practicality of the style. Anyone with any negative preconceptions about the movement might be forced to think differently after seeing this intriguing collection.

The Arts and Crafts House: Then And Now exhibition comes to the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle from Saturday 10th October 2015 until Sunday 31st January 2016.
