As gender is increasingly perceived as a spectrum rather than a binary, there has been an influx in the amount of visible art and culture created by and for people who deviate from the gender binary’s ‘norm’. One such excellent example is the critically acclaimed Testosterone, which stops in at Arts Centre Washington on Thursday 3rd and The Witham, Barnard Castle on Friday 4th May.

Testosterone is a physical theatre comedy, written and directed by Kit Redstone. Redstone transitioned at the age of 33 and he has taken the opportunity as a writer and director to tell his own story of discovery through his play, which dramatizes his first experiences in a male locker room. Balancing absurdist comedy with emotive subjects, Testosterone promises to be a heartfelt, in-depth exploration of gender, identity and, specifically, masculinity refracted through the lens of a ‘new’ man.

These subjects are too often ignored by mainstream media, so seeing them brought centre stage is not to be taken lightly, and it’s certain that Testosterone will be an entertaining and educational performance for everyone, wherever they may lie on that gender spectrum.
