Northern Charter is set to welcome two exciting events in February, as a workshop with celebrated poet and writer Tara Bergin comes to the Newcastle venue on Tuesday 6th February and an open studios event with Giles Bailey and CIRCA Projects arrives on Tuesday 13th February.

Tara will read a selection of poems from her new book and talk informally about her methods of writing and researching. In her capacity as lecturer in Creative Writing at Newcastle University, Tara will also lead a short, open-to-all, workshop surrounding Louis MacNeice’s 1935 poem Snow – which features the phrase ‘world is suddener’, which has been employed in various forms as titles for Giles Bailey & CIRCA Projects’ collaborative activities.

The two events are in CIRCA Projects and Giles Bailey’s studio in The Northern Charter.

CIRCA Projects invited artist Giles Bailey to spend two-years producing a new body of work with them in the North East of England back in 2016. It lead to a very interesting collaboration around performance and writing.

The two have hosted an ongoing series of open studio events titled Studio Is Sudden, inviting a number of guests who work with archival material, rethinking the contemporary by moving away from dominant narratives in history.

To mark the end of this series of open studio events, Giles Bailey will present an exhibition of new work he has produced during this period, titled: Your Base is Showing. It includes video, performance, print and audio work and makes for an exciting pulling together of thought-provoking work.

Tara Bergin is at Northern Charter, Newcastle on Tuesday 6th February and Giles Bailey is at the same venue on Tuesday 13th February.
