Something with a raised eyebrow, sharp suit and razor wit is hitting the region this spring – no, not James Bond, but ex-corporate lawyer and Weegie comedy genius Susan Calman, celebrating 10 years in comedy with her latest tour!
If you haven’t seen or heard of Calman before, then you clearly don’t listen to enough radio 4 – she’s rarely off the airwaves! Since quitting the lawyer game in 2006 (oh yeah, she’s proper clever – she won QI don’t you know) she’s barrel-rolled her way to the peak of the comedic tree, appearing as a regular on tellybox quiz-show favourites such as Have I Got News For You and 8/10 Cats.
Whilst the comedian is as innocent as a wee girl from Glasgow can be, a devout lover of cats and a self-confessed depressive, she is also unfathomably funny. Her caustic wit transcends the bounds of observational comedy, as most of the things she discusses can – and do – only ever happen to her. Of course, that might be something to do with her obsessive worrying, slightly diminutive stature (4’11’’) and quirkily dysfunctional personal life. Calman brings her delightfully punny tour ‘the Calman before the storm’ to Northern Stage on Monday 6th March – if this lady doesn’t make you laugh, there’s definitely a problem with your ears.
