After a highly successful launch event last month, which saw a string of award-winning short films from the renowned DC Shorts screened, the very first Sunderland Shorts Film Festival is now open to submissions. It’s giving a unique opportunity for filmmakers from the region and beyond to screen their work to an audience of influential and international figures in the industry.

Running between Thursday 2nd and Sunday 5th July, the festival will be screening works from filmmakers across the globe to showcase the best that short-form cinema has to offer. Around 60 films will be screened overall, all handpicked by the Festival’s Programming Team, which will include professionals and local volunteers. Awards will be handed out to the best submissions of the festival in various categories, recognising the achievements of those selected for screening.

Jon Gann, Programming Director of the DC Shorts Film Festival, said: “I have been working with the programming team to develop a method for evaluating submissions based on strength of story, production values and relevance to the audience. I am confident that the team of volunteer reviewers and programmers will have a large number of films from which to choose the final selections — and that the films will be enjoyed by the community at large.”

A small selection of films chosen for Sunderland Shorts will also be screened at this year’s DC Shorts Festival, one of the largest film festivals of its kind. This gives filmmakers yet another opportunity to bring their work to a much wider audience.

Submissions are now open but will close on Friday 3rd April. To find out more about how to submit a film to the event, visit the Sunderland Shorts website.
