Sunderland is set to celebrate the wondrous world of short film this summer, with the Sunderland Shorts Film Festival running from Thursday 30th June until Sunday 3rd July. Before that extravaganza though, there’s a taste of all of the best films from last year’s festival. A range of venues have been selected, with the first one at Pop Recs Ltd already having taken place; there’s lots to look forward to ahead of the event itself.

With the taster screenings ranging from hour-long evening shows, which are suitable for anyone 16 and over; through to shorter, 30 minute family screenings, specially selected with younger viewers in mind. With short films being a a marvellous part of movie making, yet sadly passing some people by, these are the perfect introduction to a wonderful art form, and a chance for film buffs to celebrate some special slices of film. With something for everyone, the shorts cover many genres including romance, comedy, adventure and sci-fi; and range from two minutes to 20 minutes in length.

Sunderland Shorts Film Festival is organised by Sunderland City Council, sponsored by See It Do It Sunderland, and is supported by MAC Trust and Bureau Design. The festival was created in collaboration with the prestigious DC Shorts Film Festival in Washington DC, to further develop cultural links between the two cities.

These free taster screenings take place at Back On The Map on Tuesday 29th March and Tuesday 5th April, City Library on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April; Canny Space on Thursday 5th May, with the final screening at Pallion Action Group on Wednesday 1st June, though more dates and venues are to be announced. More information about the screenings can be found at Sunderland Shorts Film Festival’s website, here. With the chance to whet your appetite with the best bits of last year’s festival, there are few better ways to get excited for this year’s collection of short films.

The Sunderland Shorts Film Festival runs from Thursday 30th June until Sunday 3rd July, with the next taster screening at Back On The Map, Hendon on Tuesday 29th March.
