This year’s inaugural Sunderland Shorts Film Festival was a huge success, with more than 65 short films from across the globe being screened at venues around the city. With a little help from the prestigious DC Shorts Film Festival, everything from rom-coms to horror and experimental mini-masterpieces were shown, displaying the talents of some of the world’s best short filmmakers. It also gave the opportunity for some local artists to screen their work, showcasing the vast amount of talent in the region. A selection of the chosen films from this year’s festival are also going on to be screened at the 2016 DC Shorts, putting them in front of the some of the world’s top critics in the field.

The festival will be returning to Wearside in 2016 and from Monday filmmakers from the UK and beyond will have another chance to submit their film to the panel, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work in front of an influential, international audience.

Wojtek Bozyk, of the programming team for Sunderland Shorts, said: “We want to bring local, national and international filmmakers together to celebrate the art of cinema – offering viewers the chance to experience a wide range of films from all over the world. We’re looking forward to seeing the submissions and putting together a    programme that will appeal to everyone from film experts and those working within the industry, to people who simply enjoy watching films.”

Alongside submissions from filmmakers, the team are also looking for people to join the panel of reviewers and volunteers to help out during the festival itself. If you think you’ve got a mini masterpiece waiting in the wings or if you fancy yourself as the next Philip French, make sure you register your interest.

Submissions for Sunderland Shorts 2016 open on Monday 28th September.
