The Tall Ships come to Wearside this month and to coincide, the ever wonderful Summer Streets festival returns to Sunderland even bigger and better than ever on Saturday 14th July with a day full of free entertainment that promises something for everyone at Seaburn Recreation Park.

For younger festival goers there will be a wide range of craft and activity sessions along with singing and songwriting workshops, and for older visitors, the acclaimed Wylam Brewery from Newcastle will be running a bar throughout the event.

Obviously though, you want to know about what musical treasures are going to be shivering your timbers this year. Never fear, because topping the bill are indie heroes Little Comets, who appear fresh from touring their latest musical missile, Worhead.

Also appearing are Royal Northern Sinfonia, up-and-coming playlist botherers The Pale White, local folk pop legends The Cornshed Sisters, the ever-vital Durham punkers Martha, thigh slapping fun from Big Red & The Grinners, soul and funk grooves from Smoove & Turrell, off-kilter post-punk from much hyped Sunderland upstarts Roxy Girls, and – my little eyes are wide with genuine excitement  – the wondrous emo indie poppers Beezewax from Norway where, coincidentally, the Tall Ships will eventually end up after they leave Sunderland’s fair shores.
