Though he’s now based in Ireland, painter Stephen McKenna travelled across and lived in various countries across Europe and European territories from 1960 onwards. Over that period of time, he painted the landscapes that he saw in his distinctive graphic style, looking at everyday life and the buildings that surrounded him. In his exhibition at Middlesbrough’s mima, the biggest solo retrospective of his work for over a decade, many of his works since the 1980s are being displayed, giving audiences the chance to see both McKenna’s style and the changing shape of European life.

With help from Dublin’s Hugh Lane Gallery, mima have collected a vast array of McKenna’s works which touch on the architecture and lifestyle of European cities from different perspectives. From the delicately curved walls of Lisbon’s Custom House and the high-rise apartments in the Bay of Naples to the traditional grandeur of Berlin’s Bode Museum, McKenna manages to capture the spirit of the buildings and landscapes, saying much about their purpose and place in the world. It’s a unique chance to see both a slice of history and a large collection of some of Ireland’s most stunning modern art.

Stephen McKenna: Perspectives of Europe 1980-2014 exhibits at mima, Middlesbrough from Friday 6th February until Sunday 7th June.
