The North East’s foremost fictional band, Stabbing Les are set to perform again the only way they know how…shambolically. The four-piece – made up of artists, curators and mercenary musicians – are debuting Top Of The Popera at Northern Stage’s Stage 3 on Saturday 4th July.

The band remain unashamedly stuck in their ways; as they’ll champion analogue media forms in a story of one man’s doomed love for antiquated technologies, told across four acts.

Across the night, artists will be exploring and embracing themes of remembrance and sentimentality. In This Is Your Tomorrow artist Trevor Pitt presents songs that tell tales of alienation, sartorial glamour and teenage exile. More melodic jingles come from the talented Edwin Li, a local artist-performer and champion of the archaic.

Insightful oration comes from Dr. Adam Hansen, founder of the Lit Pop Book Club, while Guy Mankowski reads extracts from his post-punk novel How I l Left the National Grid.

Stabbing Les use the guise of a chaotic covers band to put unprecedented spins on songs from their youth. How are music and social norms represented and how does the music industry reinforce them? Much like the masses culled from TV talent shows, Stabbing Les fail so that we don’t have to.

Top Of The Popera is at Stage 3, Northern Stage on Saturday 4th July.
