Arriving clutching a heap of rewards – including Best Film and Best Performance at the Lisbon International Queer Film Festival, and the Outfest Los Angeles Grand Jury Award – Something Must Break is the bold and exceptionally original film is the first non-fiction feature from hot new Swedish director Ester Martin Bergsmark.

Andreas saves Sebastian from a beating in a nightclub toilet, and for Sebastian it’s love at first sight. Seemingly worlds apart, the provocative, epicene Sebastian and the staunchly heterosexual Andreas embark on a relationship that challenges both of them, against the backdrop of a repressive Swedish society.

Questions of identity, gender, and sexuality are brought to the fore for both people as Andreas struggles to come to terms with his attraction to another man, and the sullen Sebastian gradually transitions into a new personality, Ellie. Can Sebastian find the strength to let Ellie loose and not let his happiness depend on someone else?

Saga Becker lights up the screen as Sebastian in a melancholic, often dreamy tale of love and identity, featuring a beautiful and well-chosen soundtrack alongside some poetic if none-too-subtle imagery. This intense, transgressive romance touches on notes of gender, sexuality and the self, and will leave viewers with a heavy heart.

Something Must Break begins screening at the Tyneside Cinema on Friday 3rd April.
