Smoove & Turrell are two names that have rolled off the tongue just as sweetly as Northern and Soul for the last decade. The duo’s passion  and dedication to soulful funk-fuelled sounds is highly commendable, and they’ll be celebrating 10 years of working together with a ‘best of’ album and a live (now sold out) show at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 1st June.

The band’s compilation – Solid Brass: Ten Years of Northern Funk – comes in the form of a beautiful brass coloured double gatefold LP and comprises 18 tracks from their five studio albums, including two new songs that will undoubtedly please fans of the band’s live shows. Producer Smoove and vocalist John Turrell have finally laid down their version of The Spencer Davis Group’s classic I’m A Man in the studio and having been a live favourite for years, it’s well worth the wait. Another new track, the reflective Give It Back, completes a collection that includes anthems like You Could Have Been A Lady, Let Yourself Go and the timeless Beggarman, all tracks that we’ve come to know and love from one of the greatest live acts that the North East has produced. The compilation will also be Jalapeno Records 300th ever release so it really is time for celebrations all around!
