Reliably informed

sir Was (or Joel Wästberg to his mam and dad) is visiting The Cluny 2 on Saturday 23rd November and bringing tracks from his brilliant latest offering Holding On To A Dream with him. The Gothenburg-based multi-instrumentalist blends classic analogue soul and old-school hip-hop with shimmering Swedish pop production to lustrous effect on his new record, and you can be sure his live show will offer much of the same.

From his humble beginnings as a saxophonist in the tiny village of Frillesås, to travelling through Mozambique and Zimbabwe and studying in Durban, South Africa, Wästberg has been soaking in genres from across Africa without ever losing that hip-hop soaked jazzer sensibility.

Expect to hear head-bopping beats from the new record like Little Dragon collaboration Deployed and the lo-fi, low-key banger In The Midst, among others. It’s also well worth pointing out that during this run sir Was will headline London’s Scala so the chance to see such an innovative artist in such a small room (and for less than a tenner!) should not be passed up. If you like anything from Bonobo to Tame Impala, sir Was is well worth your time.

If that wasn’t enough, Newcastle’s own producer beatmaker collective Grey Tapes provide excellently chosen support.
