Reliably informed

Thanks to its global approach to art, which just happens to be a train ride away in London, the TATE has gained an international reputation for being one of the best galleries in the world. The man behind it is Sir Nicholas Serota, who was last year voted as the most powerful man in the art world in ArtReview magazine. That means that even though you might not have heard of him before, Sir Serota is more a more powerful force in the art world than pop artist Jeff Koons, iconic performance artist Marina Abramovich and any member of the fabulously wealthy Qatari Royal Family.

In a rare trip to the region, he’ll be venturing to our own institution of the Hatton Gallery to discuss the importance of the Newcastle gallery and its collections, including its pioneering work in the field of “basic design” training. The discussion will then be followed by a question and answer session hosted by Eric Cross, the Dean of Cultural Affairs at Newcastle University. So, if you’ve ever relished the chance to grill the most powerful man in art, now’s your chance.

Sir Nicholas Serota is in conversation at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle on Friday 24th April.
