With help from his brother Chris and friend Jim Brownlow, Simon Donald started producing the iconic Viz magazine from his parents’ bedroom in Jesmond in 1979. With its parodies of post-war British comics littered with toilet humour and vulgar language – as well as a good dose of black and surreal humour – the Viz quickly became a cult adult comic and reached a peak in the early 1990s (thanks to a number of rivals attempting to imitate – but never bettering – the Viz format).

Simon released a critically acclaimed autobiography, Him Off The Viz, which is now being re-released. To celebrate, Donald is touring around a number of unusual and intimate venues to record readings from the book, all of which will be edited together to from part of the audiobook. The Lit & Phil is just one of the stops on the tour, where Donald will be sitting down to delight fans of Viz with tales from his life and work. As an iconic part of Geordie culture, this special reading is one not to be missed.

Simon Donald is at the Lit & Phil, Newcastle on Wednesday 22nd April.
