As if we needed any further proof that live comedy is on the up in the North East, news that comedy night Silly Billies is graduating to a larger venue this month will please fans of the irreverent funny-bone ticklers.

Previously based at Ouseburn Valley’s Cumberland Arms (where they play one last hurrah on Friday 6th February), the comedy club has gone from strength to strength, as organiser Jack Gardner explains: “We’ve grown in popularity over the last year and a half and have a cult-like following for putting on a night like no other; one that celebrates the anarchic, strange and surreal.” Gez Casey, literary manager at Live Theatre, is a big fan of the club. “He recently came down to watch Silly Billies Comedy at the Cumberland Arms and commented that he had not felt such a buzz surrounding a comedy night since watching Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out at Goldsmith’s Tavern in New Cross.”

Their first show at Live Theatre on Sunday 22nd February will be headlined by Simon Munnery, the godfather of alternative comedy and someone who embodies the night’s ethos. They also have Silly Billy regulars and great alt. stand-ups John Scott, Fernando and Ben Crompton performing as well as the wonderful Holly Burn.

Silly Billies’ Valentines Special featuring Tom Taylor, Sam And Tom, Si Beckwith, Barry Fox’s Museum Of Curiosities and more are at The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle on Friday 6th.

Their event at Live Theatre on Sunday 22nd February features Simon Munnery, John Scott, Fernando, Ben Crompton and Holly Burn.
