Psychedelica in comedy either works or it doesn’t (for every Monty Python, there’s a Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy…). The Silly Billies Christmas Bonanza takes place at the Cumberland Arms on Saturday 13th December, and all the signs point towards it fitting comfortably into the former category, like a bug in a very snug pub-shaped rug.

For starters, it has master surrealist, comedian Jack Gardner on hosting duties, guiding audiences down a rabbit hole of clowning, strange characters and absurd goings-on, and he will be introducing some of the best alternative comics on the circuit. First up, newcomers Andy Clark and Nat Wicks, both offering a wonderfully off-beat outlook on life. They will be joined by fast, witty storyteller Michael Holford who, we are told, will have audiences in the palm of his hand, apparently with stories of prolific American film star Johnny Seven, as well as Paul Brett, Fernando, and ukulele supremo Joby Mageean.

All this just so happens to be taking place on the very same night as the grand finale to some little-known TV series called the X Factor (anyone?) People with their heads screwed on are much better off being taken on this surreal magical mystery tour of Lapland, whilst a team of self-certified cretins pop up to entertain them along the way.
