Reliably informed

When a band comes from somewhere as far-flung as New Zealand to tour the UK, saying their show is unmissable is completely justified, especially when they’re an act as sublime as Shocking Pinks. On Thursday 8th October, Shocking Pinks, the dreamy dance-pop project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nick Harte, drop by The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle to bless us with their sweet vibes. Founded in Christchurch in 2002, Shocking Pinks blend the dance-punk of DFA Records acts with C-86 jangle pop and My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegaze haze to create a lo-fi sound that combines euphoria with shy intimacy. October’s tour coincides with the well-deserved re-issue of their 2004 debut Dance The Dance Electric; an album that made huge waves in their native New Zealand upon release. Support for The Cumberland Arms date comes from an impressive bunch of local acts. Trip hop outfit Grey Tapes wowed us at NARC. Fest back in July, synth-pop goths Fractions provide spine-tingling atmospherics and soaring vocals, while psych-rock trio Cave Suns round up this delectable bill.
