If, like me, you found The Edge of Love a little bit sweet and too filled with Keira Knightley, you were probably looking for someone to make a slightly more acerbic film about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Well, it’s lucky co-writer and star of Set Fire to the Stars, Celyn Jones, thought the same thing. This slightly more acidic take on a short period in Thomas’ life is screening at ARC, Stockton for five days starting on Friday 12th December.

The film focuses entirely on Thomas’ first booze-soaked tour of America in the 1950s, where he met aspiring poet and academic John Brinnin (played by Elijah Wood). Brinnin struggles to keep Thomas on a leash during the tour, who simultaneously appals and enthrals everyone who comes within ten feet of him. Filmed in a luscious, nostalgic monochrome (chosen by Downton Abbey graduate Andy Goddard), Set Fire to the Stars aims to capture the unruly power and force of its main subject. The film is also scored by Welsh troubadour Gruff Rhys, whose soundtrack serves almost as a companion piece to his LP American Interior.

Set Fire to the Stars screens at ARC, Stockton, from Friday 12th December.
