It’s been a rather busy year for Durham’s Empty Shop HQ, which is dead set on becoming quite possibly the most eclectic venue in the North East. With gigs becoming an almost weekly occurrence, it’s no surprise that the venue is now getting visitors from much further afield.
Performing at the venue on Tuesday 22nd November, Serengeti (the moniker for Illinois-born David Cohn) is one of leftfield rap’s most celebrated artists, he’s collaborated with Open Mike Eagle and Sufjan Stevens, released numerous albums per year. Never ceasing to bring life to all of the music that he spent years creating in his head whilst living a childhood between the all-black South Side of Chicago and an all-white suburb of Olympic Fields in Illinois; his background has allowed him to see society from two different perspectives, and form a rather unique way of looking at both sides of society and his inner psyche.
Support comes from Evolution Emerging alumnus Kay Greyson and the Durham-based, self-declared ‘barely rap’ group Outside Your House; two brilliantly subversive and unique artists who perfectly compliment the ferocious individuality of Cohn. With a bill as brilliantly strong as this, how could you resist?
