Back in 2012, a little documentary was released called Searching For Sugarman. It followed two Cape Town natives as they travelled in search of American musician Sixto Rodriguez, following rumours of his death. The series of events that followed changed Rodriguez’s fortunes; the documentary Searching For Sugarman – which gets a one-off screening at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle on Thursday 8th January – revived the musician’s career and brought his songs to a new generation of fans.

Upon its release, Searching for Sugarman won numerous awards but it was the use of Rodriguez’s music – which had a strong following in Africa but was all but forgotten in the rest of the world – that had the most impact. For a while, the eponymous song was played extensively on radio stations and interest grew in Rodriguez’s albums. It’s well worth watching just to see how documentary can still have an impact on the current cultural landscape.

Searching for Sugarman airs as part of the One Pot Music and Film Festival on Thursday 8th January.
