Attempting to turn downtown Newcastle into the mean streets of NYC, Screenage Kicks return with their first secret event of the year, screening American thriller The Warriors on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th July at a location which will be announced on the day.

Based on Sol Yurick’s powerful 1965 novel, Walter Hill’s depiction of The Warriors has become a cult classic: a New York City gang return to their home turf after they’re framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. It’s a film that Screenage Kicks’ Kristian Atkinson has had his eye on ever since the popular immersive cinema events first began. “The film portrays a fantasy version of the gang culture that was going on in New York (especially the Bronx and Brooklyn) at the end of the 1970s, it’s the very same culture that gave birth to hip-hop and the film is part of hip-hop legend, having been referenced and sampled hugely in rap music. The film also features the graffiti explosion that was a key component of hip-hop in those early days.”

Although the movie’s soundtrack doesn’t feature rap as such, its expansive electronic synth score transports you right back to the era, and the Screenage Kicks event aims to take you straight to the heart of the action, in their own inimitable way. “We are going to turn the entire evening into an old school gang affiliated New York hip-hop block party jam! As well as the classic cult movie expect live graffiti, breakdancing, MCs, DJs and all manner of New York vibes.”

As ever for a Screenage Kicks event, fancy dress is encouraged, and Kristian’s got some tips for costumes. “We are urging people to come dressed as a gang member of their choice. Whether it’s The Warriors or The Baseball Furies, The Turnbull AC’s, The Rogues, The Lizzies, The Gramercy Riffs, The Orphans and many more. It’s exciting wondering what combination are going to turn up!”

Screenage Kicks have become a real regional success story since their inception last year. They’ve screened iconic cult films in unusual locations, with highlights including The Big Lebowski at Lane 7, Reservoir Dogs at the Boiler Shop, Blade Runner at the Discovery Museum, The Shining at Wallsend Memorial Hall and Apocalypse Now at Battlezone Laser. The immersive and inclusive events are a real testament to the hard work and creativity of all involved. Every event offers something utterly unique, so don’t miss this one!

The Warriors will be screened at a location to be announced on the day of the event, taking place on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th July.
