Never mind the fact that they’ve got probably the best band name ever, Screamin’ Miss Jackson & The Slap Ya Mama Big Band also happen to be really rather wonderful. The Bristolian band are doing well on the roots music circuit, having supported Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, The Corn Potato String Band and our very own Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra, who they’ll be appearing with at The Cluny, Newcastle on Friday 11th December for the local group’s annual festive hoedown (also featuring folk/skiffle heroes The Buffalo Skinners and country powerhouse The Most Ugly Child).

Fusing a love of 20’s and 30’s jazz singers like Anita Carter and Georgia White with elements of country folk and sublime western swing, Screamin’ Miss Jackson’s seven-piece ragbag of musicians have a fun and authentic sound. Their debut album’s due for release in 2016 and if reviews of their eponymous EP are anything to go by, it’ll be chock full of good time tunes which luxuriate in the sounds of Miss Jackson’s washboard, whistle-clean electric guitar licks and shuffling percussion. As befits a band with such an interesting moniker, their live show will provide fans of hokum, ragtime and Cajun stylings plenty of sounds to get those feet a’tappin’.
