Reliably informed

Only one man could Meet The Space Invaders, Encounter Pac Man and Win The World Cup and come out intact. To quote his mentor, King Tubby, “Damn, this little boy must be a scientist!”

The word ‘legend’ gets bandied around far too often, but Scientist is the real deal. He’s been at the cutting edge of dub music since his days as King Tubby’s assistant in the mid-seventies, and in the eighties released a string of stunning dub albums on Greensleeves, working with the mighty Roots Radics on LPs adorned with Tony McDermott’s classic cover art. Sadly, that Greensleeves deal went sour but Scientist – now based in the US – has kept working steadily since and released dozens of albums. Always at the cutting edge, he’s even worked with some of the key players of dubstep on his Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space.

And now, in what is a stunning piece of booking, The Cluny are hosting a very special Scientist show this Halloween. Clearly Halloween calls for a revisit of Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires, his 1981 classic set of spine-chilling deep dubs. He’ll be dubbing up the band Kiko Bun & The Upper Cut live as they perform the album in its entirety in a show never before performed in Europe that also includes theatre, dance and performance alongside pure bass weight. This is no lightweight ting.

Scientist is at The Cluny, Newcastle on Thursday 31st October
