The best labels are those bearing a clear identity, whether that be visual or an ethos which runs through all of their activities. From the name alone, you get the sense that Sad For Life Records is on the right track.

A brand new start-up based in Teesside, the imprint is the brainchild of Aaron Lythe, Sam Donaldson and Callum Armstrong. At present, the former pair’s band, Heel Turn, are the label’s only act, though with others set to follow there’s little doubt they’ve exciting plans in the pipeline. “We want to iron out all of the creases we find through releasing and promoting our own music before we work and take risks with others,” they say. “After multiple conversations about how we would run a label, from branding to releasing, one day we said ‘alright, sound, let’s just do it – we have nothing to lose.’”

Now, they’re preparing to launch their venture with a special show at Middlesbrough’s Sticky Fingers on Saturday 7th April, featuring fuzzy alt. rock from Newcastle’s Creature and cathartic, dreamy shoegaze from locals Figmennt, along with a hardcore-tinged post-grunge headline set courtesy of Heel Turn themselves. Oh, and did I mention that it’s free? No excuses, Teesside folks…
